Can a student learn more and learn faster? Is it beneficial to have one-on-one time with my instructor?
Like any other sport or activity: your progress is a consequence of how hard and how smart you work. Group classes here at United MMA Katy, are the best-proven way to teach Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai etc., since the diversity of training partners creates more and different challenges allowing a student to improve more quickly. However, private classes are definitely an essential complement that no serious student should do without. The individual attention and approach that a 1-hour session with one of our instructors provides can and does lead to significant improvement in a student’s game flow. It is highly recommended that all students take at least one private lesson per month to review techniques and address specific challenges in his or her training.

PRIVATE SESSIONS CAN BE SCHEDULED WITH ANY OF OUR INSTRUCTORS FOR THE FOLLOWING CLASSES: Tae Kwon Do, MMA, and BJJ. Your private classes here at United MMA Katy will be specifically designed to fit your needs and goals. To get started contact the school’s staff and explain that you’d like to take private classes. We’ll set an appointment with an available instructor so he or she can evaluate and build a program for you. There are many package options available

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art designed to work with the principles of leverage and technique instead of brutal force and strength. The main focus of BJJ is on the ground grappling. In our opinion, this is often the most important and frequently also the often the most neglected area of martial arts and MMA. It is a fact that 90% of all fights end up in clinch and eventually on the ground. BJJ gives you the necessary tools to fully protect yourself in the most common type of street confrontations and against any other type of martial art. We always encourage students to walk away from a fight if you can, but we believe the combination of of martial we teach gives you the opportunity to defend yourself effectively against an aggressor.

To excel in any endeavor, individuals need to have a strong set of values and a solid character that gives them the perseverance to achieve his or her goals. We have found that BJJ in a positive and supportive setting such as that found at United MMA Katy creates an environment that allows them to experience and understand core values like focus, discipline, persistence, cooperation, and respect needed for a child to mature towards a real-life champion. The outcome of continued childhood practice of martial arts goes far beyond the accomplishments on the mats. The discipline and excellence demanded by our instructors often carries over to the child’s behavior at home and at school.

What are the principal qualities of a great fighter? What does it take for an ordinary person to realize his or her own potential?
Top performing fighters and individuals follow a common set of principles that sustain their success. The practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu allows individuals to understand these principles through an exciting process that combines instruction, observation, practice, feedback, live training, and competition.
United MMA Katy implements a long established Fundamentals Curriculum, which is a comprehensive revolving technique program. The Fundamentals Program teaches basic principles of effective BJJ and self-defense. Its structure condenses an immense diversity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ( BJJ ) into core fundamental moves combined intelligently and safely to optimize your learning.
While attending the Fundamentals classes you will learn a wide variety of techniques, normally 2 per week. This will normally include a self-defense oriented technique. The more you attend the more practice you will have. Students are partnered up with a more senior student to help ensure a safe and productive practice. While the fundamentals program is a starting point for all jiu jitsu practitioners, we encourage students always continued attendance to fundamentals classes, as continued mastering of the basics is the key to a steady progression.

After approximately 4-6 months of participation (depending upon your individual attendance) in the fundamentals classes, what is next on the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey?

While the Fundamentals Program focuses on the building blocks and basic principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ( BJJ ), the Advanced Program is built on high-level techniques and drills that start shaping the students game flow through the development of reflexes, speed and reaction time as well as transitions between one technique and another.

After a few months in the United Advanced Program students typically experience a deeper involvement in United’s philosophy, a stronger bond with training partners as well as more discipline and commitment to healthy habits that keep them in good shape.
The Advanced Program is based on a defined class structure and curriculum that take a broad and open-minded approach, incorporating techniques from different grappling styles like wrestling, judo, sambo, and, of course, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We offer many variations of classes within the ‘Advanced’ Program all of which compliment your game and provide a different stimulating learning environment: Advanced Gi BJJ, No-Gi classes, Competition/Open Mat classes and Private classes.

When practice is more important than your next belt, you have truly become a United MMA Katy student.

We recommend you arrive 10 minutes before schedule, so we can get you the proper loaner equipment, if needed, and get you signed in as a trial member. When lining up to begin practice, you’ll notice the instructor has a precise curriculum plan for the class. The class warm-up routine is always similar so you know exactly what to expect. After warm-up time, the instructor will introduce one or two techniques. You will be given time to practice those techniques and ask questions. You may do some simple drills to help with your muscle memory of the techniques. Beginner and advanced classes diverge from here. Beginner classes will normally have fundamentals technical challenges working with a partner. Advance students will do this but also begin to conduct live sparring (rolling) with their partners.

You will find strong support from your fellow students and be made to feel welcome. Our philosophy is that we cannot get better without our training partners. You will learn quickly that everyone is welcome because everyone helps their fellow students. By the end of class, you’ll be physically tired but mentally exhilarated. Once you have finished the class, we provide you the opportunity to ask any questions with one of our program directors as well an explanation of the class programs we offer.
